The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented situation that has not only exposed deep-rooted structural inequalities in the region but also exacerbated pre-existing divides. Women have been particularly affected by this crisis, as the gender equality gains of the last 15 years have come under threat. As for the labor market, for example, female employment suffered its longest and most prolonged decline in 2020, as well as a much slower recovery. These results reflect not only labor market adjustments in Latin America and the Caribbean but also skewed gender roles within households that influence how they may cope with this crisis. In fact, evidence from the region suggests that the time women allocate to unpaid household chores has increased substantially due to the pandemic. Lockdowns and social distancing also brought with them a second pandemic—an increase in violence against women within households. How can we move forward on this agenda?
